Three New Murals for Glasgow
Community-led murals in Govan and Finnieston, plus a flash sale for Scotland’s Suffrage History Education Packs.

We’ve been mural-ing in Glasgow!
It’s been too long since our last newsletter but we’ve been verrrrrry busy – and we’re excited to share some of what we’ve been getting up to…
New murals in Govan and Finnieston
We were commissioned by Yardworks Glasgow to create THREE new mini-murals on electric boxes in Govan and Finneston!
Our first features the Suffrage Oak, planted in Kelvingrove Park in 1918 to celebrate (some) women getting the vote in the UK. It was the collective effort of suffrage organisations in Glasgow, so the mural features members of four of them with their badges. Find the box near the newest tree of the year – the Argyle Street Ash!
Next up is Helen Crawfurd’s mural. She was a Govan Rent Strike organiser, suffragette, politician and communist activist. The mural features Helen in her trademark fur coat and her words: “We can do much if we are awake and organised”. The box is next to the new Govan-Partick bridge.
Our last mural depicts the mighty Isabella Elder, a philanthropist who worked to improve the lives of Govanites and fund education for women. She gifted Elder Park and Library to the people of Govan: “My heartfelt wish is that Elder Park may prove to be a blessing”. Check it out next time you visit Elder Park Library.
The murals are getting amazing feedback from local people out walking and on social media, where Helen in particular is enjoying a well-deserved 15 minutes of fame. Get on facebook insta or bluesky and let us know your favourite!

Creative workshops and community co-design
Each mural was co-designed with local communities in Govan and Finneston – something we love doing! We hosted four creative workshops with local community groups, who helped us identify images, quotes, and colours to feature in each mural. Everyone came up with such amazing ideas – it was difficult to decide on the final designs!
We had a brilliant time with community members and families who took part in our Yardworks Festival workshop on the planting of the Suffrage Oak Tree,
We also worked with Gilded Lily (group pictured here) and Govan’s Craft Cafe to co-design the Isabella Elder and Helen Crawfurd boxes.
We especially loved working with young people at Govan Youth Information Project’s school holiday programme, both a 9-10 year old group, and younger!

Women’s History Scotland Conference
We love the good people of Women’s History Scotland and when we heard they were holding their annual conference at Kinning Park Complex, we had to be there! We brought our Suffragette Stall with info and merchandise – which attracted lots of interest. All who attended received a Suffragette Playing Card, and the chance to win a free goodie bag. Next year we plan to submit a paper on our work uncovering and celebrating women’s histories – watch this space!
