The Fight Against Misogyny Didn’t Begin Today

When Scottish suffragettes took to the streets, chained themselves to railings, endured imprisonment and hunger strikes, it wasn’t simply demanding the vote. They were challenging a society that believed women were less capable, less intelligent and less deserving of power than men.

That belief has a name: misogyny.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be exploring how the struggles of the past connect with the realities of the present. Together, we’ll ask difficult questions, celebrate progress, and continue the conversations that so many courageous women began generations ago.

The suffragettes understood that changing laws was only part of the battle. Changing culture would take much longer.

More than a century later, women have won many legal rights, but misogyny hasn’t disappeared, it has evolved. It can still be seen in violence against women and girls, online abuse, workplace discrimination, unequal representation, harassment, anti-trans rhetoric and the everyday attitudes that seek to erase, silence or diminish women’s voices.

✊️ At Protests & Suffragettes, we believe history has the power to help us understand the challenges women face today. By recovering Scotland’s hidden herstories, we can see that many of the issues women are campaigning against now have deep historical roots.
