Festive Markets, the Bugler Girl and a New Patreon

We’re feeling festive!!!

How is it the end of the year already? But it IS that time of year, and the P&S elves have been busy creating new Suffragette-themed Christmas Cards! We’re also bringing some exclusive merch to Festive Markets around Glasgow – catch us there if you can.

We also have some festive-themed herstory for you which highlights how artists were always part of the Votes for Women campaign, and finally – we’re launching a Patreon channel which we’re really excited about!

If you’re in or around Glasgow over the next few weekends, you might bump into the Protests & Suffragettes crew at Christmas markets all over the city! Herstories: the Bugler Girl

Art can be an overlooked aspect of suffrage activism – but many artists turned their talents to creating iconic images for the campaign. The WSPU had the Suffrage Atelier, while the NUWSS had the Artists’ Suffrage League. The images they created were used for newspapers, banners, posters and even Christmas cards.

The Bugler Girl (or Clarion Girl) was designed by illustrator Caroline Watts (1868-1919) to promote the NUWSS procession of June 1908. As the NUWSS was non-violent, they were keen to point out that her sword was sheathed! She later appeared on the front page of NUWSS newspaper The Common Cause in November 1913. But the image was also borrowed by US suffragettes and rebranded in purple, white and green for Women’s Political Union badges.

This year, she got another makeover, thanks to the Protests & Suffragettes creatives! She features in our beautiful Suffrage Angels & Heralds collection of Holiday Cards. Top image via Women’s Library LSE.
