Highlighting women who campaigned for women’s rights and social justice through a series of Workshops and Events on Wikipedia, Knowledge Activism and Creative Poster-Making.
Glasgow Herstory Workshops
We’re delighted to announce this project highlighting women who campaigned for women’s rights and social justice through a series of Wikipedia Workshops and Creative Workshops, thanks to support from National Lottery Awards for All and Wikimedia UK.
From August – November 2023, communities and groups in Govan and Glasgow were invited to explore the history of local Suffragettes and Suffragists, raising the profile of these amazing women and hopefully inspiring future changemakers!

Wikipedia & Knowledge Activism
We hosted Wikipedia and Knowledge Activism Workshops in libraries and archives across Glasgow. Participants learned how to edit Wikipedia, why we consider editing Wikipedia a form of #knowledgeactivism.
Workshops were hosted in the Scottish Oral History Centre at University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow Archives and Special Collections, Glasgow Women’s Library, and the Mitchell Library. Each venue gave a short talk on their collections related to suffrage, and at GWL we even got to see Maud Joachim’s Hunger Strike Medal!
We believe that editing Wikipedia, and teaching others to do the same, is a pivotal way to increase the amount of information on Scottish Suffrage activists which is available on the open web. Adding our research to Wikipedia also allows young people using our Education Packs on Scottish Suffrage to learn more about these incredible changemakers.
“Support from Awards for All & Wikimedia UK allowed us to raise the profile Glasgow’s Suffrage/ttes – and to equip new changemakers by editing Wikipedia & creating dynamic Suffragette posters and postcards!”

Creative Workshops
Those attending used archival images and quotes from activists to create dynamic collages. Workshops were hosted by organisations in Govan and Glasgow including Gilded Lily, Craft Cafe, and Thistles & Dandelion.
We were excited to be working with people who spoke many different languages, and Voice Over Interpreting Services helped translate quotes from eight Glasgow Suffrage/ttes into Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish Sorani, Polish, Ukrainian, and Urdu.
We think the resulting co-designed Suffrage/tte posters and postcards are amazing – and we printed and gifted several designs to participants at a closing party. Check our socials for more images, and watch our shop as some of these will soon be available for purchase!
“We’ve translated quotes from 10 activists into 6 languages, and we really want to continue to work with New Scots & other ESOL speakers to create posters that celebrate Glasgow’s Herstories!
We’ve also developed and expanded our Wikipedia Workshops – teaching more people how to become knowledge activists! “

Our Shop
How many Scottish Suffragettes can you name? Support our work, and get to know these amazing women!
Our zine, posters, and Suffragette Trumps cards make great gifts. The cards are great for families to play together, and promote intergenerational learning.
We worked for over a year to develop teaching resources on Scotland’s Suffrage History, partnering with preeminent scholars to research suffragettes & suffragists who campaigned in each & every region of the country. These amazing activists are featured in these beautiful, robustly researched resources.
